Hiring in Mexico
What It Costs to Hire an Employee in Mexico in 2026
Minimum wage, aguinaldo, vacation, IMSS, Infonavit and profit sharing: what an employee in Mexico really costs in 2026, with the law behind each line.
Short answer. An employee in Mexico costs more than the salary on the offer. On top of the salary you budget social security (IMSS) from day one, a 5% housing contribution (Infonavit), a year-end bonus of at least 15 days of pay, at least 12 paid vacation days after the first year plus a 25% vacation premium, and profit sharing. In 2026 the salary itself can't go below MXN 315.04 a day, or MXN 440.87 a day in the northern border zone.
The first number a US company asks us for is the salary.
It's the right question. It's just not the whole answer.
In Mexico, a formal job comes with a set of benefits the law gives every employee. We call them prestaciones de ley.
When a company asks us to recruit, the role "must offer statutory benefits". And when we review a request, a missing employer registration or missing statutory benefits are red flags for us.
In Mexico the salary is the starting point of the cost, not the cost.
What is the minimum wage in Mexico in 2026?
Since January 1, 2026, Mexico has two minimum wages:
| Zone | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rest of the country | MXN 278.80 / day | MXN 315.04 / day | +13% |
| Northern Border Free Zone (includes Tijuana) | MXN 419.88 / day | MXN 440.87 / day | +5% |
That's a floor, not a market rate.
"The minimum wage in Mexico went up a lot," as I tell clients. And salary scales didn't follow: "a very big gap with the pay scales started to show. To this day, companies haven't managed to absorb such a strong change." (Quotes translated from Spanish.)
So before you budget, check what similar roles pay. We do it for every search: "we analyze similar openings for similar profiles, and we give the client evidence of how much the competition is offering."
What does an employee in Mexico cost on top of the salary?
These are the statutory costs every employer carries:
| Cost | The minimum | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Social security (IMSS) | Register the employee within 5 business days and pay employer contributions | Ley del Seguro Social, art. 15, I |
| Housing fund (Infonavit) | 5% of salary | LFT, art. 136 |
| Year-end bonus (aguinaldo) | 15 days of salary, paid before December 20 | LFT, art. 87 |
| Paid vacation | 12 days after the first year, rising with seniority | LFT, art. 76 |
| Vacation premium | At least 25% of the salary for vacation days | LFT, art. 80 |
| Weekly rest | 1 paid day off for every 6 worked | LFT, art. 69 |
| Mandatory holidays | January 1, May 1, September 16, December 25 and the others in art. 74 | LFT, art. 74 |
| Profit sharing (PTU) | 10% of the company's taxable income, split among employees, capped per person | LFT, arts. 117 and 127, IX |
IMSS employer contributions are calculated on each employee's base salary under the Social Security Law. Ask a Mexican accountant for the exact figure for your salary band.
How do I estimate the yearly cost of one hire?
Start with the daily salary. Then add the benefits measured in days.
Here's the calculation for one employee in Tijuana at the 2026 border minimum wage, once they complete their first year:
| Line | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Daily salary | Border minimum wage | MXN 440.87 |
| Aguinaldo | 15 days × 440.87 | MXN 6,613.05 |
| Vacation days | 12 days × 440.87 (paid, not worked) | MXN 5,290.44 |
| Vacation premium | 25% × 5,290.44 | MXN 1,322.61 |
| Infonavit | 5% of salary | 5% of the year's salary |
| IMSS | Employer contributions | Ask your accountant |
That's our calculation from the legal minimums. A real offer for a skilled role starts well above the minimum, and every line grows with it.
If the person works from home more than 40% of the time, add the telework costs: the equipment you provide and the proportional share of their internet and electricity (LFT, arts. 330-A and 330-E). We summarize the six telework rules on our page about how to hire remote employees in Mexico.
What changes with the 40-hour work week?
Mexico is reducing its maximum work week step by step.
The constitutional reform was published on March 3, 2026, and the Federal Labor Law reform on May 1, 2026.
The weekly maximum goes from 48 hours in 2026 to 46 in 2027, 44 in 2028, 42 in 2029 and 40 in 2030.
If you're hiring for a shift-based role, plan your schedules for each year now. The same salary will buy fewer hours every year.
Why does a lowball offer cost you more?
Because it doesn't get filled.
"We very often find that companies have a very high expectation, and a very low job offer."
When that happens, we don't force anyone. We show the data. "When they're offering a very low salary, or very low benefits, we support them and inform them, so they understand the average for the profile they're looking for."
A low offer also costs time. Every week the role stays open, your team carries the work, or the project waits.
If you want to see how that conversation plays out, read how to make a job offer Mexican candidates accept.
How does the cost look from each side?
If you're the founder or CFO, statutory benefits are fixed costs. Budget them from the start and they never surprise you in December.
If you're the hiring manager, the total cost is your argument. A complete offer is easier to defend than a salary that looks low next to the market.
If you're HR in the US, these benefits don't map one to one to US benefits. Aguinaldo is not a performance bonus: it's mandatory.
If you're the candidate, statutory benefits are the floor. Anything above them is what makes an offer competitive.
Every side reaches the same place: the complete, formal offer is the one that gets filled.
Frequently asked questions
Is the aguinaldo optional? No. It's at least 15 days of salary, paid before December 20, and it's prorated for people who didn't work the full year (LFT, art. 87).
Do employees on probation get statutory benefits? Yes. A probation period can last up to 30 days, or up to 180 days for management and specialized roles, and the employee has every statutory benefit during it (LFT, art. 39-A).
Is profit sharing paid every year? When the company has taxable income, yes. The rate is 10% of taxable income, and each employee's share is capped at three months of salary or the average received over the last three years, whichever is higher (LFT, art. 127, IX).
Is there a higher minimum wage in Tijuana? Yes. Tijuana is in the Northern Border Free Zone: MXN 440.87 a day since January 1, 2026.
